In 1870 the Brunswick
Collander Co. of St. Louis built and shipped via steamboat to Oxford,
Iowa the Brunswick Triple Arch Bar now in Micky's. The bar remained
in Oxford until Prohibition when it was dismantled and stored. In
1932 Joe Vitosh opened a tavern in Iowa City whcih was sold to Harold
Donnelly in 1934. Donnelly or "Doc" as many people called
him served many famous people—Dylan Thomas, Richard Nixon,
Grant Wood, Tennessee Williams and Kurt Vonnegut, to name a few.
In 1974 Urban Renewal served notice that forty years of St. Patrick
Day celebrations and Donnelly's would end. The bar was sold to Stoney
Harmon of Mt. Vernon. Aunt Maude's of Ames bought the bar for expansion
to Iowa City. The bar and Aunt Maude's would not make the move thus
prompting the owners to sell the bar to Jim Mondanaro. Mondanaro
moved the bar to Ottumwa to be in a restaurant called Vanessa's.
When Vanessa's closed in July 1980, Mondanaro decided to bring the
bar back to Iowa City where it belonged.
The back bar is made out of solid oak and dismantles into ten pieces.
The matching front bar dismantles into four pieces, the bar top
being solid mahogany.
